The direct-service philanthropy the program offers to Young Luminaries mentors is unmatched in any other Step Up program (and very few other programs in New York); the relationship that develps between the intern and company supervisor over the 6 to 8 week experience is extraordinary and lasting
Young Luminaries internships are paid because it is a necessity; students would otherwise have to search for paid summer jobs to support their families that do not build workplace skills
The cost of the internship is minimal in comparison to the impact. The minimum commitment is 20 hours per week for 6 weeks at NY state minimum wage ($7.15 per hour), which means a company can participate for a contribution of only $858.
