What is RSS?

RSS (formally "RDF Site Summary", known colloquially as "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as event calendars, blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel", contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually.

RSS content can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader" or an "aggregator". The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds.

Instructions for adding RSS to Mac or Windows Vista WIDGETS

Internet Explorer 7

  • Click on the button that says "Subscribe to this Feed"
  • After you click this button, it pops up a dialog box that directs you to save your feed into a folder
  • Click "Subscribe", and the feed will then be saved to your Favorites Center automatically, or the disired folder you chose.

Internet Explorer 6

  • You will need to download and use an RSS reader to read news when it arrives and click headline links to get the full Web page.

Firefox

  • Click the "Subscribe Now" button.
  • A dialog box opens and asks you if and where you would like to add your "Live Bookmark".
  • Select a bookmark location, and click "OK". Your feed will now be added to the folder location you selected in your bookmarks.

Safari

  • When viewing a page on this site, Safari (on Tiger, not Panther or previous versions of the OS) adds the following RSS icon to the address bar
  • This gives you a nice view of the RSS data with one click on the bottom right: "Add Bookmark..." Select a destination folder and save.

  • The next step is to tell Safari that you have RSS feeds and that you'd like to have the browser automatically keep you current on what's at that site. This is accomplished by choosing Safari --> Preferences... and then clicking on the "RSS" option:
  • Once you make your preferred RSS settings, close the dialog box and you are finished.

PC Vista Gadgets

  • First complete the steps outlined above for adding a feed to your browser.
  • If you are familiar with Gadgets you may simply add an RSS Gadget and paste in the Gadget links listed above for the appropriate feed.
  • Otherwise, please follow the steps outlined below:

Apple Macintosh Widgets

  • Click the Web Clip button next to the address field in Safari and select exactly what you want your new widget to display.
  • Then click Add, and Safari sends your Web Clip widget to the Dashboard, where you can view it alongside your other widgets.
  • Your Web Clip widget is “live” and will update as frequently as the page from which it came.
