Teen of the Month: New York's Gargi

Gargi Purohit is an 11th grader at The Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria. She was born in India and has a strong passion for reading and theater arts. She loves to act, sing, and dance. Already tenacious and active in her community, Gargi was unable to join Step Up programming until her junior year because of other time-consuming priorities, such as an internship with City Council speaker Christine Quinn. She became a Step Up teen to allow herself the opportunity to be exposed to various career options and to meet women mentors who can provide insight into how to gain professional success. She says that she and her friends attend Step Up, even on the coldest and busiest of days, because it will help them become stronger women. One of her main goals is to attend Columbia University and be happy with her life. She was a teen panelist at Step Up NYC’s Women’s History Panel.
