Althea Gibson
(1927-2003)
American Tennis Player + Professional Golfer

Althea Gibson made history when she became the first African-American to win a Grand Slam title in tennis.

People all over the world may know Venus and Serena Williams or Coco Gauff as some of the best tennis players around, but many may not know that Althea Gibson paved the way for them. Althea Gibson grew up in Harlem and began playing tennis when she was just a young girl. Her early life was tough and she struggled in school, but she seemed to find refuge in sports. She was very athletic and loved all kinds of sports and seemed to excel when it came to tennis.

Gibson worked hard and practiced often which paid off when she won a local tournament which was sponsored by the American Tennis Association. She continued to dominate the tennis court as she won 10 straight championships between 1947 and 1956. One of her biggest accomplishments was when she became the first African-American to compete at the U.S. National Championships in 1950. Later, she also became the first African-American to compete on the women's professional golf tour in 1960. To top it all off, she made it into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1971 and into the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame in 1980.

It was never easy for Gibson. She had to overcome many barriers due to the rampant racism of the time. Fortunately, she also had a lot of supporters. Most notably is Dr. Robert Johnson who helped in coaching and mentoring her and became a huge advocate and sponsor for Gibson. Others, such as Alice Marble, lobbied to ensure that she be included in competitions.

Althea Gibson accomplished so much in her lifetime and did it by being incredibly resilient and disciplined but also by being willing to receive help. Gibson stated, "I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me."
