Each week during November’s #MembershipMatters Campaign, we’ll highlight the story of a Step Up member in her own words. Ready to join her as a member of the national network of women inspiring girls to fulfill their potential? You can become a member here.
When I joined Step Up in 2006, my life changed in profound ways. I initially joined when I moved to Los Angeles as I was interested in meeting like-minded women who support one another while giving back to the community of women and young women in need. The organization did not disappoint. I was able to get involved with the mentorship committee immediately and met amazing women who have become my close and trusted circle of friends over the last 10+ years.
Most importantly though, was the opportunity Step Up presented to meet and mentor young high school women who have given me so much more than I could ever give to them. As I have watched these young women, as freshmen in high school, grow over their 4 years in the Step Up program it has amplified the knowledge I have about how easy it is to make a difference in my community. These young women have more strength and courage than anyone I have ever met. They have endured such incredible hardship, personal loss and abuse, yet they push on to excel in school and pursue their dreams. They are my inspiration every day when I get up and even think for one minute that I have anything to complain about or be scared of – they are simply amazing!
It has been my honor and a privilege to be a Luminary member of Step Up and I look forward to continuing to grow and learn as I meet more young women and the members of Step Up who enrich my life in so many ways.
