My name is Alicia and I am a proud Step Up alum. During my junior year of high school, I was introduced to the organization, but did not become actively involved until my senior year. Although, I only participated in the program for a little over one year, my overall experience has been life-changing!
During my involvement with the organization, I had the opportunity to create long-lasting relationships with staff members and my peers. Initially, I was nervous to meet powerful, professional women from multiple industries and backgrounds.
Getting involved boosted confidence
Today, I am truly grateful for being able to connect with inspiring women who offered encouragement and a listening ear as I concluded my high school journey and prepared for college. Through my participation, my confidence and public speaking skills drastically improved. I understand the importance of having and sharing my voice. Additionally, I was able to attend corporate field trips, college and career conferences and Saturday mentoring sessions at Young Luminaries Workshops (YLW). At YLW, I worked with Step Up staff and mentors to prepare for my transition from high school to college and a paid summer internship after graduation. This experience was enlightening, because we discussed required documents to submit to colleges/universities, resume and cover letter writing techniques, professional etiquette and conducted mock interviews.
This past summer, I was a recipient of a paid summer internship at ComEd. I was excited and felt prepared to start work due to some of the career readiness tips I received during YLW. At ComEd, I had to juggle multiple tasks as the youngest intern. Time management, communication and customer service were skills that were very important to my success. The highlight of my experience was the day of my final presentation in front of ComEd staff. I was delighted to share with the team everything that I had learned and planned to take with me to future professional opportunities. It was a thrilling experience and it was wonderful to have the support of my Step Up family in attendance.

A limitless future
I'm currently studying psychology at Olive Harvey Community College. I have a genuine interest to help people. In the future, I hope to have my own private practice, continue to cook some of my favorite dishes and spend time with family and friends.
My future is limitless and Step Up has helped me to understand that I achieve anything with hard work! Step Up has made a tremendous impact on my life and continues to positively affect the lives of other teen girls.
