Why did you join Step Up?
I grew up in a very positive and encouraging home. I was told that no matter who I am, I am strong enough to get far in life. I carried that mindset through my elementary and middle school years, but found myself struggling to get equal treatment. My male peers would have a slight advantage and that did not sit well with me. Coming to high school and being introduced to Step Up, I was intrigued by their mission: believing all girls should have the opportunity to fulfill their potential. I joined because I wanted to surround myself with successful women who shared similar ideas. It's truly inspiring.
How has Step Up made an impact in your life?
Since joining Step Up, I've become more outgoing and confident. I was that student who dreaded participating in class and avoided any attention. Now, I've been told multiple times that I participate too much! I have Step Up to thank because of the endless dedication from mentors, instructors and members.
Tell us about a memorable Step Up moment
My favorite memory has to be the San Francisco Bay Area College Tour last year! Not only was I exposed to some amazing colleges, but I also made some really great friends. I was able to connect to other Step Up girls from other schools and share personal experiences. My Step Up sisters exposed their fears and insecurities, allowing themselves to become vulnerable, and showed their undivided love and support. It was such an empowering moment.
