Real Questions. Real Talk.
Welcome to Ask Her Anything—Step Up’s new space for young adult women to ask the questions on their mind and get honest, heartfelt advice from mentors and leaders who’ve been there.
This month, one of our community members shared:
Q: "Lately I’ve been in a weird place where nothing really lights me up. I used to have so many goals and ideas, and now I’m just kind of floating. I show up, do my job, hang out here and there but I don’t feel connected to anything. How do you get your spark back when you feel stuck?"
We took this question straight to Step Up’s CEO, Delores Morton, and here’s what she had to say:
Delores’ Take 💡
Sounds like you're in a bit of a funk, and trust me, we've all been there! That feeling of just "floating" when you used to be a goal-setting machine can be super disorienting. But here's the cool thing: it's totally normal, and you absolutely can get that spark back.
🌱 Chill Out and Tune In
Sometimes, feeling "meh" is your brain’s way of saying: slow down and reconnect with yourself. Think back to a time when you felt alive and buzzing. What were you doing? Who were you with? Chances are, you’re either a little burnt out or just need space to remember what makes you tick. Don’t rush into chasing the next big thing—give yourself permission to breathe and clear some mental space.
🎨 Play Around (No Pressure!)
When you’re uninspired, the last thing you need is pressure to “find your passion.” Instead, experiment with little joys. Pick up an old hobby, try something random just because it sounds fun, or dive into articles, podcasts, or books on topics that once lit you up. For me, that meant blogging again—not to become “a blogger,” but just to write. The point isn’t to find your forever-thing, it’s to play and see what sparks.
🔑 Remember Your "Why"
Our goals usually have a secret sauce—our values, our impact, the things we truly care about. When you feel disconnected, take a beat to revisit your “why.” What ripple effect do you want to make in the world—even in the smallest way? Remembering your core drivers can shift your perspective and reignite your energy.
🚶🏾 Baby Steps, Big Wins
Forget giant leaps. Focus on micro-moves. Curious about something? Give it 15 minutes. Interested in a new skill? Watch a short video. These small steps may not feel huge, but they build momentum and remind you that you’re moving forward—even when motivation whispers instead of shouts.
The Bottom Line
It’s more than okay to be in a “floating” season. Think of it as a recharge station—a pause before your next spark. Be gentle with yourself, trust the process, and know your spark is still there, waiting for its moment to shine again.
