When some of us think of Valentine’s Day, we think about a day dedicated to spending time and expressing our love to that special someone. Valentine’s Day is often associated with chocolates or roses and anything else that may say, “I love you.” However, some of us might run for the hills when we think about Valentine’s Day, simply because not all of us have a special someone on Valentine’s Day, and no one wants a day to remind them of that. Also, for those with a special someone, shouldn’t every day with them be like Valentine’s Day? Either way, there is nothing wrong with recognizing your best friends. Galentine’s Day is a special holiday to celebrate your friends who you hopefully love as well.
Galentine’s Day first made its debut on season two of Parks and Recreation. On Parks and Recreation, Amy Poehler’s character Leslie throws her annual “Galentine’s Day” celebration for her lady friends on February 13, the day before that other holiday. “Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we just come and kick it.,” Leslie Knope explains in episode 16.
It’s a day to celebrate the lady friends in your life, well, it’s 2021, single or not. Ever since the airing of the episode, Galentine’s Day; although unofficial, has been recognized and is a holiday many womxn look forward to. There’s no one way to celebrate. You can gather your pals and drink champagne safely at home via Zoom. Or you can make reservations at a nice restaurant that allows for social distancing.
You can celebrate Galentine’s Day any way you want. It’s just a day to show your friends you love them, no romance necessary. It’s pretty cheesy, and that’s what makes it so special. It is a day dedicated to showing your friends that you care for them.
