Crafting Your Game Plan

written by Lexi Navarro, Management Consultant, Accenture

It’s so important to make an appointment with yourself, grab a coffee, and evaluate what you’ve accomplished, what you’d like to do better, and how you want to close out the year, because now is a pivotal moment.

The truth is: you are the only true advocate and manager of your career and life. Don’t let everyday worries quietly steal that time from you. The one thing you absolutely should do at the is write down new goals. Physically write them down. If you only think about them or say them out loud, it’s too easy to lose track and let yourself off the hook. Think about how good it feels to cross something off a list. That feeling comes from seeing your progress and in your head, progress is a lot harder to keep track of.

As you write each goal down, pair it with just one next step – a single task that moves you closer to achieving it. It’s one thing to have all the ideas in the world; it’s another to map out the path to getting you there. After writing your goals, checking in with your professional platforms, things like your LinkedIn, your skills, and resume. The more you do now, the less you’ll scramble later. One of the keys to success in life is being timely.

This is also a great moment to expand your network and reach out to people. Towards the end of the year, we hit the holiday season and people start heading out of office. Right now, is a sweet spot to plant seeds for new relationships.

It’s fair to say this work is easier said than done. But there’s no better investment than the one you make in yourself. Whether you’re proud or a little disappointed in where you’ve landed at the halfway mark, take comfort knowing you are setting yourself up for a strong second half.

Your Game Plan Starter Kit

Ready to turn reflection into action? Start here:

1. Prioritize what matters.

Choose 1–3 goals to focus on for the rest of the year. Ask yourself: What would make the biggest difference in where I want to go next?

2. Turn goals into milestones.

For each goal, identify one meaningful milestone to work toward and the next action that will move you closer to it. Start with what you can accomplish this week.

3. Assess your toolkit.

Take a strategic look at your resume, LinkedIn, skills, and experience. What’s already working in your favor? What’s missing or needs strengthening to support your next move?

4. Activate your network.

Identify one person who could offer insight, encouragement, or a new perspective. Reach out with intention and start a conversation that could help you move forward.

PRO TIP: Explore Step Up’s Mentoring App to connect with mentors who can offer guidance as you navigate your next move.

5. Celebrate yourself intentionally.

Schedule a recurring check-in with yourself to reflect on what’s working, celebrate progress, and adjust your plan as your goals evolve. A good game plan leaves room to change course and certainly deserves celebration.
